The 5th issue of EYESORE Magazine explores 'Lost Spaces' through three themes; identity, systems, dreams. Considering how we relate to lost spaces, what the causes and effect of them are and what the future may hold. The issue will engage an international readership with current creative practice and spatial politics at a significant moment in time. Contributors include Mashid Mohadjerin, John Divola (through a collaboration with MACK publishing), Giant Dolls House, Sirkhane Darkroom and many others.Compiled through a combination of an international open call and commissioned pieces, the issue brings together investigative journalism, photo essays, art projects, historical accounts and poetry, to provide a platform for the voices often overlooked in the discourse of the built environment.

“We wanted Imprint to be intimate with plenty of time and space to read, chat, meet and build relationships”

When Theo and David proposed the idea for Imprint to the rest of the team, we knew it had to be done. A publishing fair which explores how people are using print to talk about cities!We wanted Imprint to be intimate with plenty of time and space to read, chat, meet and build relationships. We had a small list of names who we knew and who we wanted to be there. Bucket-list names such as Urban Lab, We Made That, Theatrum Mundi and Columbia Books, Latin Village, Save Ridley Road, ROMP, MonoRhetorik, City Strips and Midge Press. We also knew there were loads of names out there who we didn't know and who needed to be involved. The open call - that ever-reliable friend - did the magic in that respect, giving us the fortune and pleasure of meeting Natassa (Desired Landscapes), Noam (Activating Cities) and Kyriakos (und.), Liam (Design Unlikely Futures), Giorgia &amp; Lorenzo (Unsent Postcards) and the Solidspace team. In the end, we had twenty seven independent publishers from eight different countries with us over the weekend.

	Over the last few years we had developed a nice public programme (see Culture Clash &amp; London in Limbo). We wanted to bring that to Imprint and use the opportunity to try new formats. Less talking, more action! Desired Landscapes took us for a walk around Bloomsbury and Alex de Little taught us how to listen to buildings. Resolve and Coram Field's Youth Group collaborated to build a mobile DIY printing press and produce some wicked posters.Afterparti and We Made That encouraged us to print, rip it up and start again. Setareh Noorani evoked memories of our favourite buildings, lost forever to the trauma of redevelopment. We knew a healthy, active public programme would be important for Imprint and with a healthy dose of hindsight now in our minds, the programme did more than we expected. Favourite moment? A number of over-65s with no direct link to us coming down and joining the walking tour. They turned up in full walking gear, sticks and all, after hearing about the tour on an online forum some of them use. "I am really into experimental walking tours on the weekend", was how one lady put it to us.

Imprint captured an atmosphere which has been developing over the last few years. A lot has been said about the resurgence of independent publishing in the last ten years (see Print! Tearing It Up - which we were humbled to be a part of). In our eyes, an under-appreciated subplot to this story has been the embrace of the medium by inter-disciplinary practitioners engaging with the built environment. This has been the story of EYESORE and every single participant who was involved with Imprint. We felt a need to celebrate this by bringing together this diverse mix of groups and individuals in the same place. The hope, and achievement, being that through conversation and interaction we can strengthen this network, and imprint the unprintable in our collective consciousness.

Dilate was an attempt to do more with our magazine launches. Typically, our launches had been an excuse to wildly celebrate the return of ‘free time’ in our lives. We would find an interesting enough space, hire a loud sound system, try and find an alcohol brand to give us free drinks in return for some dodgy logo placements and guilt-trip our friends into buying tickets. Half-jokes aside, our launches had become key to forming the networks and relationships which were so important to us and the communities we were a part of. They were an opportunity to bring together the not-so-disparate tribes of ‘yeah I went to uni in London from 2013 to 2016 (or thereabouts)’. As time passed, the new networks we were a part of thanks to work and post-uni meandering, became part of these launches too. By the time Dilate came around, the network was embedded and particular to our individual and collective experiences. But it was always growing. We met people who we had wanted to work with for ages and whom we collaborated with that year. The atmosphere was special.

Dilate was always about transforming Issue 4 away from the printed page and towards the arena of public programming and debate. When we began discussing a more-than-a-launch event for the issue, there were two stories which jumped out as a foundation for a programme. Amika’s report on how the Grenfell community were using arts to cope with the disaster and Emily Sarsam and Alex Kurunis’ collaborative photo-essay on one of London’s most beautiful markets, the Latin Village. These two epitomised a spirit of collectivity, togetherness and positive social action which we found sprinkled throughout the issue. It was clear that Dilate should be about developing and sharing this atmosphere. The rest of the programme came together nicely as Amika introduced us to Nendie, who introduced us to Lowkey, and Char (Giant Steps) introduced us to Kandice, who introduced us to Neil. Networks and programming couldn’t have been more aligned.

	“The programme was equal parts sombering, grounding and energising”

<img width="1080" height="720" width_o="1080" height_o="720" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d6485ac9a20ad9d8dfcb1d2be173e65217fb90a9b674fcefee06969efb8300bb/Dilate_035.jpg" data-mid="82427828" border="0" alt="&gt; Panel discussion exploring contemporary grass-roots activism in london" data-caption="&gt; Panel discussion exploring contemporary grass-roots activism in london" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d6485ac9a20ad9d8dfcb1d2be173e65217fb90a9b674fcefee06969efb8300bb/Dilate_035.jpg" />

	We really tried to squeeze everything in this one day. So we thought while people were taking a break from the talks and screenings, they could see some of the works from the latest issue. The work included:
&gt; Alex Kurunis’ photographs of the Seven Sisters Latin Village&gt; A collection of photographs Claire Köster found in ‘Blub’, an abandoned leisure centre from her childhood.
&gt; Spreads from a faulty version of ‘Homo’ by George Selley, taking us on a journey into Britain’s prehistoric past.&nbsp;

&gt; Shahram Saadat’s bull installation, including an original horn of the Osborne Bull.
&gt; A multi-media installation from Radio Zaatari, a refugee-run radio station.
&gt; A series of beautifully bizarre photographs of Paris by Robin Rozen.&nbsp;

We even had a blind bid to top it all off - some of the works were on sale, with Alex raising a generous amount that he kindly donated to the Latin Village cause. Dilate was the first time we’d produced an event of this scale (until Imprint rolled into town) and leaving financials aside for a second (lol), it couldn’t have gone better. The sun was hitting abnormal highs for February and for those who ever had the fortune of going to Giant Steps on a sunny day will know how special of a place it is when the weather is in a good mood. The programme was equal parts sombering, grounding and energising - which is exactly what we wanted. The event-inspired-by-magazine format allowed us to broaden the impact of the stories we had printed in Issue 4 by introducing new mediums and voices. Oh and of course, there was an afterparty, with wicked DJ sets by Zakia and Houseplants, and an amazing performance by la familia The Yonis. It was amazing. So were the Negroni’s.

	With three issues under our belt at this point you could say we had transcended novice-dom and landed ourselves on the doormat of Getting-OK-At-This-Land. We knew what mistakes we had made with Issue 3 and had some ideas around how we could fix them. Firstly, Nina needed an extra pair of eyes, ears and hands to help on the design front, so in came Michael, a close friend and regular collaborator. The result was Issue 4 being the best designed so far. The design of the mags has always been its strongpoint, and now looking back, it’s crazy to think that Nina was the only one in charge. She killed it and continues to do so. With Issue 4’s design, it was about more than just natural progression. There was a gear shift in how we understood the design and the voice it could have for itself.

Our approach to our stories developed, too. Commissions became a much more collaborative, time-intensive process. We had the confidence to know what worked for the magazine and the trust in key writers and artists (we hope they trusted us too). The open call continued to be an unbelievably rewarding process to go through. Nothing beats the feeling of strangers getting in touch and committing their time, energy and intellect to an idea of your own doing. A nice synergy opened up between the commissioning and open call process - best exemplified by the Latin Village photo-essay. Emily got in touch via the open call with an idea to do a piece on the market. Her initial proposal was great - but not appropriate for a printed magazine (don’t want to give the idea away in case we come back to it). We knew Alex from around-the-way and having seen his photographs of the Latin American community in Elephant and Castle suggested they talk and see if something could arise. What came to flower was the anchor piece of the whole magazine. It made the bloody front cover! The piece on Latin Market, along with Amika’s exploration of arts and creativity post-Grenfell, represented a clear attempt to develop our engagement with current happenings in the crazy city we call London. Understanding and dissecting contemporary realities has always been a key focus of our work; now we wanted to move beyond mere reporting and commentary, and towards a more proactive and constructive engagement with issues that we felt passionate about.

It took exactly eleven months to get Issue 4 out. It was the longest we had spent on an issue. We knew there was no rush and it was better to take our time with everything. Of course, we were all well out of university now, deep in ‘The Real World™’, and time had to be thought of differently. Yet it was worth it. For sure. To celebrate, we booked out the window display of Charlotte St. News for a week (the week leading up to Christmas obvs) and got everyone down one weekday evening to drink free beer and freeze their hands and minds whilst 9-5ers walked past and looked at us like the weirdos we are.

event typeA Deep listening and conversational workshop exploring collective histories, stories and identities of Sheffield.&nbsp;

Dates02 - 03 June 2019

LocationThe S1 Arts Space, Sheffield, United Kingdom

	Narrating Sheffield was an exercise in speaking with strangers. Strangers we were because it was our first time in Sheffield. Strangers were the participants who had never met us or eachother. Yet over two days the term ‘strangers’ became redundant - for what does the word even mean when you can sit down with someone you’ve never met and chat for hours on end? Perhaps it’s a word which only means something in London, where all us “unfriendly southerners” live. In Sheffield, it felt like you could sit down and chat for hours on end with everyone and anyone.

<img width="1080" height="607" width_o="1080" height_o="607" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c8e3b39843efe992b20983936a08c4a180760222458dd9215c190e8f907e2677/JAY_6743.jpg" data-mid="82427834" border="0" alt="&gt; the s1 artspace located in park hill Sheffield" data-caption="&gt; the s1 artspace located in park hill Sheffield" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c8e3b39843efe992b20983936a08c4a180760222458dd9215c190e8f907e2677/JAY_6743.jpg" />

“The People knew more than the internet”

	From the time Akil and Seth (Resolve Collective) asked us to do this, excitement and appreciation would often interchange with unease and doubt whether, as a group who had never been to Sheffield, we were the right people to encourage the locals to talk. In the end, this self-awareness and uneasiness proved to be the essential ingredient. We were the curious tourists, the mindless wanderers, asking questions which only someone with no idea about Sheffield could ask. We specifically did almost zero research on the city (the people know more than the Internet). We did not ask about Hillsborough, Orgreave or any other ‘national’ event which calls Sheffield home. Any pre-written questions were used only as ‘uppers’ when the conversation felt like it needed a wee boost.

	Beyond improving our own knowledge of Sheffield, the workshops served their purpose in allowing the locals to learn more about the city they call home and the people whom they share it with. It was an inter-generational and multi-ethnic group, each the sum of their own experiences, drawn from all corners of the city, with diverse vocational and educational backgrounds. Sometimes these differences would provide contrasting perspectives and the conversation was all the better for it. Mostly however the consensus was pretty solid (e.g. ‘Don’t go to Meadowhall’). The result was hours of unstructured, disjointed and aimless conversation. We followed the words and they took us to historic markets lost to regeneration, 1980s shopping centres remembered in a far better light then you would find them today and cemeteries where overgrown vines battle with the city’s ancestors. This was a folk history of Sheffield.

	CULTURE CLASH

	event SUMMARYA panel discussion exploring the types of culture being developed in London and whether or not local communities are benefitting from them.

Date02 June 2018

LocationTotal Refreshment Center, London, United Kingdom

	Conversations on culture and creativity in 21st century London have been a part of our thinking since day dot. Partly because we are part of that world as an independent magazine. Half our team went to LCC (big ups!). Everyone has worked in the arts, or at the very least, likes art. Perhaps of more relevance however is that if you talk about urban development in London, or New York, or - insert city of your choice -, and not explore the question of ‘creativity’, ‘art’ or ‘culture’, you are missing a trick.

	When we hosted ‘London in Limbo’ there were two topics which we didn’t have enough time to explore: gentrification, and the role of art, and by extension artists, in urban development. With hindsight that was probably for the better. Arman, who chairs our discussions, started his Masters in Urban Studies right after London in Limbo, and he ended up spending most of his time sitting and chin stroking about creativity and culture in London. By the time Culture Clash happened he had at least enough knowledge about the topic to ask an Amazing First Question and then sit back and chin stroke his way through the rest.

“He talked impassionately about the power and importance of squatting, and what its decline means for the lived urban experience.”

	We won’t give you too much information about what went down after that Amazing First Question because the whole conversaton is online and we want to get our YouTube views up. In all seriousness, it is worth the watch. Anna, Tony and Seth are dons. Anna heads up Space Studios - the biggest provider of artist studio space in London and an all-around 100% Certified Blue Tick Verified Artistic Institution; Tony has got years of wildly impressive experience working with local communities and enacting positive change through artistic practice; and Seth, both as part of Resolve and because of his experience working on local authority-led regeneration, is incredibly well placed to speak the realness on all the above. We covered a lot. There was even a bit of disagreement amongst panellists (ooooooooh!) which in today’s Talk Economy is rarer than seeing two Terodactyl’s on a chirpsin’ ting. There was also some great contributions from the audience. One gentleman, whom we later found out to be TRC’s don Capitol K, stood out in particular. He talked impassionately about the power and importance of squatting, and what its decline means for the lived urban experience. Audience participation is always something we enjoy about our events and Capitol K’s contribution is exactly why.

	It has been a few years since we worked on Issue 3 and so it has been nice to read back and reflect on what was, at the time, a big step for us in how we produce a magazine. It was the first time we had put out an open call for submissions and it is clear to see in the variety of the content how beneficial an open call is if you are a magazine with an internationalist perspective. We would have never been able to hear about ravines in Guatemala, shrines in Italy or spoken word in São Paolo without the open call.

In addition to the international stories, it was nice to remind ourselves how British the content was too. We went to Jaywick, Nottingham, Accrington, Enfield and Elephant and Castle. The neighbourhoods and communities we spoke with in these places do not regularly find themselves in the pages of an independent print magazine about the built environment. Their inclusion is a testament to our commitment to documenting the experiences of alternative voices and narratives, and an important reminder that there are plenty of these stories to highlight in contemporary Britain.

The photo essays are another highlight of the issue. In addition to the photos of Jaywick and Elephant &amp; Castle, the work of Jameson in Calais, Louis in Cuba, Patrick in Hong Kong and Ivan in London’s estates, illustrate exactly the power and beauty that comes when you pair photography with text.

We still have an enduring soft spot for Nico’s piece on scent and gentrification. It is probably one of the best articles we’ve published. Both in terms of its writing, theme and originality, it is a model piece and one which really set the bar in the kind of work we wanted to be known for. The same could be said for the commissioned series on trash. We are interested in creating linkages between stories around the world as they are often indicative of wider, systematic currents. The way in which city authorities around the world are increasingly failing to live up to their basic municipal responsibilities (collecting the trash, for example) should be understood in a global context (erosion of welfare provision and corporatisation of urban governance). Who knew trash could say so much about the world we live in!

Fortunately for us, unfortunately for you, the issue is now sold out. However, it is now available as a free downloadable PDF.
